Hey blog followers!

I apologize for my absence! My life has been full with, well, LIFE! The last time I posted, I had a newborn baby, and my husband deployed with the military (and is still gone), so I've been quite busy, to say the least! My posts from back then still apply and rock now, so I hope you enjoy going back through my past posts and find some use for them!

Classtools.net has several tools that you can use on the SMART Board for learning and classroom management. You can create your own interactives using the premade templates. One tool I really like is the random name selector (that way I don't get moans and groans for picking on students).

Taggalaxy is a REALLY sweet site that makes a galaxy out of tagged pictures that you search (from Flickr). It is a fun way to explore places, concepts and ideas because it graphically organizes the pictures by tag words. Check it out!

Incredible Interactives!

I learned about Arcademic from Allison Krieder, a teacher in my district, and fell in love with it at first click. FANTASTIC games, some with multi-player capabilities, that are in the arcade style truly motivate kids to do math and reading practice!

For all you history-buffs, here is a interactive Jamestown colony game... Like the old-school Oregon Trail game, this is similar, in that it walks you through life in that time. Check it out!

Squigly's games provides math, reading, geography, and other interactive games that help kids practice skills like typing, math facts, spelling, and recalling locations in specific continents. A pretty cool one!

This arcade-style site, Funschool, provides a link bar along the top of the screen which allows you to pick sites in reading, math, science and other core areas.

Quizhub is a K-12 resource that provides online quizzes for student learning, in an interactive format. I haven't had a lot of time to check it out yet, but it looks great!

Storyline is an online site that have famous folks doing digital read-alouds of popular stories online. What an awesome resource! Can't wait to use it with my kids...

ABC YA! is a new site that I have seen my kindergarten friends use with their students. It is known for it's K-5 interactive, academic games and resources. This is a must-see...

Although this site, Crickweb, is created in the UK, it has some fantastic interactive games that we can use in the US. Some math games use euros, so be sure you check before you use them in the classroom. Other than that, the games look AWESOME!

FINALLY! Draggable math was created to teach students carrying and borrowing, long division, and other basic math skills that many students struggle with. This is great!

Technology Integration in Mathematics provides interactive math games that would be fantastic for lessons or at-home practice...

I heard through the grapevine that my blog was creeping around the world and being noticed... I was stunned, actually, as this blog was something I had made for a college project and thought it might be useful, not knowing it would spread the way that it has. Pretty funny, but also pretty humbling! I'm glad that my work is being used and appreciated!

Check out this awesome blog! I came across this blog by accident, actually, as the owner had posted THIS blog on her blog! I started looking around her blog and it has some incredible things that I had not seen yet. You should definitely check out Teachers LOVE SMART Boards!

I thought this was so cool, and then I found ANOTHER fan of my site... Now I'm a fan of their blog as well! Check out Expat Educator in Asia! Awesome ideas and resources are here as well!

ITSC 2008: LEARN AND SHARE!

I attended the ITSC 2008 Conference in Portland this weekend and learned TOO MUCH (a good thing in this case)... Here are some sites that I learned about that you can explore and use... If you have questions about any of these resources, feel free to drop me an email.

Kathy Schrock presented about a plethora of online tools for teachers. Some of these sites are perfect for elementary kids, but some might be more for older kids (but may be modified to use with younger audiences). She has an amazing website that has a list of resources for teachers and students. Click here to see her ITSC site. Scroll down to Web 2.0 resources.

I also attended Jennifer Gingrich's presentation on movie making/story telling. Click here to see her blog, which is chalked full of resources and ideas/examples.

Yay for a new school year. I apologize for the lack of postings lately. I have just begun my first year of teaching and this is the first chance I've gotten to get online and post this information! I hope it is worth the wait!

Here are some amazing new websites!

Inkless Tales is a digital read-aloud website of stories that have been either written/illustrated by children. It reads the story aloud and has adorable graphics.

ChildU.com has great interactive activities and ebooks for kids (K-middle school) as well. It has a blend of math, reading, language arts, and other activities. This is a site you might want to take some time exploring...

Robert Munsch's Digital Storyroom is an amazing collection of almost every book he has written. He actually reads the story aloud, with a pre-story description of the vocabulary and story line. You download each story and then you are set!

Goodnight Stories has a great selection of well known picture books that are read aloud. This would be great for children as homework or for "free time" in class.

Bobinogs has amazing interactive stories for young readers! You have to check this out!

Grimms Fairy Tales has digital read alouds of popular fairy tales. It's pretty comical and would be a great way to introduce storytelling to the class.

Two Poetry/Rhyming sites

Magnetic Rhymes is a neat site for primary learners to unscramble well-known nursery rhymes using the SMART Board.

Also, Magnetic Poetry is a fun and useful site for kids to use to write on the SMART Board. They have four different modes: Kids, First Words, Storymaker and Best Friends. Check out all four!

WRITING COMICS!

Check out the resources that are available for free online for creating comics with your students. This is a great resource to write collaboratively, just like Comic Life, but for those teachers who want something fresh or who don't have Mac computers, these resources are AMAZING! If you remember one of my first posts, I mentioned online reading resources, like Weekly Reader and Time for Kids. I mentioned Scholastic News, but this resource has shown to be REALLY AMAZING, so I want to re-introduce it to you incase you haven't seen it!

Scholastic News updates DAILY with current issues like events, weather, and other important topics. YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS! I posted it as "Scholastic News", both under the K-2 Reading and 3-5 General Resources. You're going to love it!

Ambleweb C.E. Primary School created this website for Interactive web resources. WOW! You have to see how great these activities are! Incredibly, some of the math games were created by 4 to 10 year olds, but you could never tell by how excellent the games are! In addition, the site provides teacher resources! I have set the site up to open to the math page, however if you go to the top of the website and select the grade or subject area, you can see even more sites! This one's a great one to play around with! It is labeled "Ambleweb CE Primary" under General Resources.

MORE MATH RESOURCES!

In all honesty, this is one of THE BEST sites I have seen for useful, interactive math resources for a SMART Board.

Tucson Unified School District in Arizona created an Interactive Math website for K-5 (as well as 6-12, which is on the secondary page). It is INCREDIBLE to see the number of games and activities it has that can be used on a SMART Board. Take some time to explore the site and find your favorites. The site is labeled "Tucson AZ Interactive Math", under General Resources. ENJOY!

If you are looking for more difficult material (specificially for 3-5 teachers, maybe for TAG), click on the Middle and Secondary link towards the top of the left column and see if some of the middle school resources suit your needs better. Literactive.com provides FREE digital read-alouds for K-3 level books! Register, download or play live stories (with or without a voice reading the story). THEY ARE WONDERFUL! What a great idea for students to do as a class in the morning as a welcome, after recess as a cool down, or before they go home as a treat. The Human Body/ Health Topics

THIS SITE IS AMAZING! You must try KidsHealth.org on your SMART Board with your kids!

This site has kid-friendly information about their bodies and other health topics, as well as awesome, interactive resources for kids. A MUST SEE! This would be a great resource for MANY writing prompts and other activities. One writing prompt idea for starters:

Pretend you are a germ. Tell me about your story of trying to get into and around the human body.

Kids can use the touch-screen to discuss the travels of a germ (from the mouth, spreading through the body), and other things like how blood, oxygen, nutrients travel as well.

MATH PALS! A Math and Writing Activity!

KWL charts and other graphic organizers for writing!

Don't want to buy Kidspiration or Inspiration for graphic organizers? Just use SMART Board Notebook! You can use a blank page as a KWL chart, making three columns, allowing students to share their thoughts and ideas. You can save this KWL chart as a document to open up and review or add information later! You can also use the Essentials for Educators to find premade charts and graphs that are awesome for collaborative writing and thinking! FORGET THE WHITEBOARD AND BUTCHER PAPER! Save the hassle of storing paper and do it digital!

Digital Pen Pals!

I remember writing on that neat, decorative paper to students in other schools, states, and countries throughout my elementary education. I was thinking, how cool would it be to do DIGITAL PEN PALS! Not only would it be WAY easier (no postage, and can be done over e-mail!), but it could be more interactive and cooperative as a class. Here's my thinking:

The class would write a collaborative classroom letter to another classroom in their state, another state, or country (using a word processor like Microsoft Word). They can decorate the page with clip-art or pictures of the class doing things in their classroom. They then would e-mail it as an attachment to the recipient and await a reply. The class can then read the replies and figure out what they want to share next!

This could also be done on an individual basis, but the classroom letter makes it more collaborative and easier to implement on a SMART Board.

In addition, this will take some work on the teacher's part to find good recipients for letters (being sure they'll receive a reply!). Having a current e-mail address is key!

Weekly Reader/Time for Kids

Save paper and money by buying the online version of Weekly Reader and Time for Kids! You can have students read aloud with the articles projected onto the SMART Board, and can click on activities and complete them as a class right on the board!

Kidspiration/Inspiration

Have you ever thought of using Kidspiration/Inspiration on your SMART Board? Here are some ideas:

-Students can work as a class to compile ideas about a given topic (don't forget to click on the "rapid fire" button so you can type and create instant threads without having to stop every time!). Almost like a KWL chart, students can throw out everything they KNOW and WONDER about a topic, and then the class can work together to fill in information as notes with pictures and links to websites as the LEARN.

-Students can create study guides as a class or in small groups using the SMART Board and Kidspiration/Inspiration, for topics they are studying in class. These can be discussed whole group to study and review topics.
